Inside the Human Appetite
(2020)
With this series, I wanted to experiment with food photography and how food is used to show different things, especially how it is perceived in different ways dependent on how it is photographed/used. I aimed to demonstrate the sexualised element of food.
This series was heavily influenced by the 1994 'Forbidden Pleasures' series by Jo Ann Callis. I first saw this work at the London Photographers Gallery in February 2020, in the 'Feast for the eyes. The Story of Food in Photography.' exhibition. The idea of using a simple piece of food and adding lots of detail to texture - tricking the viewers mind into thinking it is something sexual (when it is simply just a piece of food) - really struck me. So, I decided to play with the concept myself, and see what I could discover.
