Life in Plastic
(2019)
It seems that Barbies are a controversial topic of today's society. We're all aware of the fact they're unrealistic and give young children false expectations and teaches what is considered 'beautiful'. Then there is the debate of whether boys should play with barbies or not (Why shouldn't they?). A childhood toy has turned into an argument, and I was inspired to make a statement about it. (Although, I do hear Barbie has added more diverse characters: Barbies with prosthetic limbs, Barbies with hijabs, 'curvy' Barbies, and it makes me happy to see that progress is being made!)
I wanted to show off this controversy through photography; to create images that makes the viewer uncomfortable, or provokes a train of thought. And so I created the Life in Plastic photographs.
